چکیده

The extent of die-back of the kelp Ecklonia radiata in the Cape Rodney to Okakari Point Marine Reserve. Summary The kelp Ecklonia radiata has undergone high rates of mortality in a region of northeastern New Zealand stretching from Whangarei Heads south to Cape Rodney and east to Great Barrier Island. Die-back of this kelp began in late 1991 and continued up to May 1993, with mortathy of over 90% in many areas. The area most heavily affected by die-back appeared to be centered on the Cape Rodney to Okakari Pt. Marine Reserve where mature kelp plants are virtually absent below 15m, and densities overall are an order of magnitude lower than in 1991. Die-back was patchier in other areas such as Great Barrier Island where affected and unaffected areas may be separated by distances of less than 100m. High densities of recruits became established at the Marine Reserve between January and May 1993 and full re-establishment of kelp populations should proceed over the next year, unless recruiting kelp becomes more susceptible to die-back in the post-recruitment phase. The causes of mortality are not yet known but so far human influences are not implicated. Hypotheses put forward to date include the action of pathogens such as bacteria, fungi or viruses, environmental effects related to temperature and phytoplankton blooms, and episodic demographic processes associated with the longevity of Ecklonia.

Virus - like particles associated with dieback symptoms in the brown alga Ecklonia radiata

Since 1991 epidemic dieback of the kelp Ecklonia radiata has been observed at the Leigh h4arine Reserve and other sites in northern New Zealand. As the dominant phaeophycean E. radiata is a very important component of the eastern coastal ecosystem, providing both food and refuge for many species. Examination of the E. radiata sap extracts by electron microscopy detected the presence of both str...

Connectivity of the Habitat-Forming Kelp, Ecklonia radiata within and among Estuaries and Open Coast

With marine protected areas being established worldwide there is a pressing need to understand how the physical setting in which these areas are placed influences patterns of dispersal and connectivity of important marine organisms. This is particularly critical for dynamic and complex nearshore marine environments where patterns of genetic structure of organisms are often chaotic and uncoupled...

Novel ssDNA Viruses Detected in the Virome of Bleached, Habitat-Forming Kelp Ecklonia radiata

Kelp forests provide essential habitats for organisms in temperate rocky shores. Loss of kelp forests has occurred over large areas in a number of temperate regions, including in Australia, where the dominant kelp Ecklonia radiata has been lost from substantial areas of the shoreline. Loss of E. radiata has been associated with environmental stressors, including increased temperature and anthro...

Physiological Responses of Ecklonia Radiata (laminariales) to a Latitudinal Gradient in Ocean Temperature(1).

We tested the ability of sporophytes of a small kelp, Ecklonia radiata (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, to adjust their photosynthesis, respiration, and cellular processes to increasingly warm ocean climates along a latitudinal gradient in ocean temperature (∼4°C). Tissue concentrations of pigment and nutrients decreased with increasing ocean temperature. Concurrently, a number of gradual changes in the ...

Ocean acidification reverses the positive effects of seawater pH fluctuations on growth and photosynthesis of the habitat-forming kelp, Ecklonia radiata

Ocean acidification (OA) is the reduction in seawater pH due to the absorption of human-released CO2 by the world's oceans. The average surface oceanic pH is predicted to decline by 0.4 units by 2100. However, kelp metabolically modifies seawater pH via photosynthesis and respiration in some temperate coastal systems, resulting in daily pH fluctuations of up to ±0.45 units. It is unknown how th...
